Volunteer

Whatever your background, identity or ability, there’s a volunteer spot with your name on it.

Getting involved is easy and, with a variety of roles to be performed, whether you prefer working with young people directly or helping in a support role, you will find yourself a valued member of an enthusiastic and dedicated team.

Not sure how you’d like to help yet, or how much time you have to give? No worries. Send us a message or have a chat with the section leader to discuss potential opportunities.

Come and join the adventure.

Help us get our young people off the waiting list and enable them and you to experience the benefits of Scouting.

Volunteering with Young People

Scouts is full of ordinary people making an extraordinary difference to young people’s lives and learning a whole lot along the way

Most of our volunteers work directly with young people through our Sections, helping young people gain skills for life through activities and adventures. Volunteering can be a brilliant way to boost your mental wellbeing. It’s a great feeling knowing you’re helping young people get skills for life, and you might even learn a lot about yourself along the way.

Whether you’d like to help out week-after-week or whenever-you-can, we provide training, learning opportunities and cups of tea – every step of the way.

Each of our seven sections requires several uniformed leaders supported by additional adults / helpers.

Team Members

Team Members are volunteers who plan, deliver, and support an amazing programme for young people. They can volunteer flexibly. Some may give their time every week, while others may give as much or as little time as they want.

Section Leaders (uniformed)

As part of a team, leaders are responsible for the planning, and safe delivery of all aspects of a section’s weekly meetings.

No previous experience or ability is required, all training and support will be provided.

Section Assistants (non-uniformed)

Supporting the section leaders with the delivery of weekly meetings and contributing to the planning of the programme activities.

Regular attendance required.

Helpers

Many of our helpers don’t need to be recorded on scouts.org.uk as they aren’t undertaking regulated activity, and therefore they don’t need a criminal record check or internal check.

Anyone helping out at Scouts must read, understand and commit to following the Yellow Card. This is our code of practice for all adults in Scouts, where we commit to making the safety of young people our priority.

Occasional Helpers (non-uniformed)

Registered on scouts.org.uk as ‘Non Member – Needs Disclosure’.

Subject to a criminal record check and an internal check.

Can volunteer unsupervised based on checks completed.

Can help out once a week / max 4 times in any 30 day period.

Can attend a camp .

Helpers (non-uniformed)

Providing informal support to help deliver Scouts.

Assisting a max. of 3 times in any 30 day period.

Supervised by Team Members or Team Leaders.

Cannot attend overnight events.

Volunteering Behind the Scenes

Not all volunteers work directly with young people, volunteers with many working diligently behind the scenes.

Support roles take many different forms; whether you have professional or practical skills to put to good use or ideas for the development of the Group we will be glad to have your input.

Your time and skills can make a difference in so many ways.

Trustees

The Trustee Board is a team of volunteers who work together, as charity trustees, to make sure Scouts is run safely and legally. At the heart of their role is a focus on strategy, performance and assurance, ensuring that the group is financially viable, legally compliant, and are generally fit for purpose both now and in the future.

Trustees meet around 6 times a year and roles are re-elected at the AGM in June.

Parent Representatives

Parent representatives’ provide an alternative point of view, offering ideas and raise matters from the parents perspective as well as participating in the general business undertaken by the trustees.

Other Supporting Roles

A number of other supporting roles ensure that the Scout Hut, grounds and minibus are safe, well maintained and in a presentable condition.

We are always interested to hear from parents who have professional or practical skills to put to good use, behind the scenes.
